ISLA NAVARINO PATRIMONIAL

5 DAYS/ 4 NIGHTS

Day 1.- Puerto Williams

We will explore the key landmarks of the southernmost city in the world while conversing with local personalities and visiting historic sites such as the Martin Gusinde Anthropological Museum. Named after the significant German anthropologist, one of the few who lived with the Yagan people in their traditional way, the museum houses one of the few existing ethnographic records and many artifacts found in the island's archaeological sites. We will visit the Micalvi Yacht Club, the last port of call before Cape Horn and Antarctica, a meeting place for sailors from around the world who dock their boats around the Micalvi, a transport ship that sailed the Rhine in the early 20th century and now serves as a pontoon, full of adventure stories from these southern seas. We will continue walking along the coast to the naval plateau, where Puerto Williams was founded, and where the first house and church of the city are located. We will also get to know the everyday places of this picturesque town, such as the shopping center, civic center, and fisherman's dock, to understand daily life on this remote island.

We will then visit Villa Ukika, where most of the current Yagan community lives, finishing the tour at the Puerto Luisa café on the shores of the Beagle Channel, part of the ferry terminal that supplies this city. This ferry arrives every Saturday from Punta Arenas, setting the pace of life in this small town, the capital of Chile's Antarctic province.

This sub-Antarctic habitat holds 5% of all species of lichens, mosses, and liverworts, making it an important biodiversity hotspot in the area. It’s a metaphor for how we should observe our environment and a reflection on how we relate to it.

OPTION 1: CERRO LA BANDERA

We will transfer to the Río Róbalo water intake, where the trail begins. It is a moderately intense trail, ascending to 600 meters above sea level on a well-marked path through an ancient forest of lengas, coihues, and ñirres (Nothofagus sp). At the top, there is a large Chilean flag, a landmark that gives the trekking its name. This magical place offers an impressive panoramic view of Puerto Williams, the Beagle Channel, and the legendary Tierra del Fuego.

We will then venture a bit into the Róbalo Valley, where we can observe the mountain range of the Dientes de Navarino. This trail is also the start of the Dientes de Navarino circuit, recently recognized as the best trekking route in Chile and the southernmost in the world.

OPTION 2: LOS BRONCES WATERFALL

The Los Bronces waterfall and river hold special significance for Errante. Its waters supply this essential element to the ecolodge. They have been studied along with the other rivers on Navarino Island and recognized as the purest water in the world.

Approximately a 25-minute walk from the ecolodge, following the Los Bronces river through a beautiful ancient forest of lengas, coihues, and ñirres (Nothofagus sp), you will find the 10-meter-high waterfall. The trail leads to its base, where you can contemplate the powerful energy of the falling water and how its presence brings life to the surroundings. The path continues around the waterfall, ascending to the point where the water falls from 100 meters above sea level, offering an impressive view of the Beagle Channel. It is the perfect spot to sit and contemplate the horizon. A small bridge allows you to cross the river and descend the other bank until reaching the trailhead, where the river flows into the sea. We continue to the beach and return along the coast to the ecolodge, observing the various types of birds that can be found throughout the journey.

Day 3: Route of the Ancient Canoeists

We will start with a technical talk by the fire at Refugio Errante, immersing ourselves in the historical atmosphere of a way of life: navigating in bark canoes, whose construction reflects a deep understanding of the environment and, in this case, the life cycle of the native forest, developed by the Yagán culture, ancient inhabitants of Navarino. Our journey begins on the Beagle Channel directly from the ecolodge, sailing through the area of Caleta Paula and Bahía Virginia.

Along the route, we discover uninhabited beaches and corners of majestic landscapes, following the course of the Beagle Channel; we will observe characteristic marine fauna: from coastal birds and curious sea wolves to penguins. We will paddle along the coast through "Conchales," archaeological sites where the Yagáns stopped and set up camps in the most sheltered coastal points. The conchales have a distinctive circular depression shape formed by rings of shell mounds of varying heights, later covered by a layer of vegetation. This shape reflects their nomadic life wandering through the channels: the accumulation over thousands of years of remnants from their seafood-based diet, along with tools and bones around the huts they cyclically erected in these protected coastal areas. These sites, of great archaeological value, have deepened our understanding of the rich culture of this ancestral people. This journey allows you to discover the magic of this island, where history literally accumulates in layers along the coastline, amidst an immensely beautiful landscape.

Day 4: End of the route

General conditions for the journey

It should be noted that weather conditions and group dynamics may require extending the duration, modifying the route on the circuit, or returning earlier to avoid risks. It is the responsibility of each participant to declare their health conditions, physical fitness, dietary restrictions, and allergies on the activity form. Participants must always inform about their health status beforehand and during the activity to ensure all necessary safety measures are taken.

The guide leading the group represents the company and is responsible for each activity to be carried out. Therefore, if a participant does not follow the given instructions, the guide has the authority to cancel the activity. If the activity cannot proceed due to weather conditions, there is the option to reschedule other activities or refund the corresponding difference for the activity.
